Powder Coating

Durable Colour. Lasting Protection.

Enhance your Urbanfab shelter or storage solution with a powder-coated finish, adding colour and an extra layer of protection against the elements.

Powder coating incurs an additional cost and typically adds 3–4 working days to the standard lead time.

Galvanising & Powder Coating

Hot-dip galvanising provides long-term corrosion protection in its own right and is Urbanfab’s standard finish for outdoor steelwork. As outlined by the Galvanizers Association, combining galvanising with powder coating creates a duplex coating system that offers decorative and additional protective benefits, such as reducing moisture and atmospheric contaminant exposure to the zinc, helping protect the underlying steel against corrosion for longer.

Protection & Finish Options

Coastal Environments

For installations within approximately two miles of the coast, or in other areas subject to significant salt-laden air, Urbanfab recommends an enhanced powder-coating system incorporating an additional epoxy barrier primer. Where powder coating is specified, the epoxy layer helps limit salt and moisture exposure beneath the polyester topcoat, reducing the risk of corrosion developing at the galvanised surface.

Powder Coating vs Hand Painting

The following comparison highlights the key considerations when choosing the right option for you and your project.

Feature Factory Powder Coating Hand-Applied Metal Paint
Finish & Protection Consistent architectural finish with an additional protective barrier. Appearance and protection depend on paint, preparation and application.
On-Site Work Factory-finished — no on-site painting required. Requires preparation, painting and drying, with site arrangements where necessary.
Cost Additional charge, quoted on request. Generally lower initial cost, allowing for materials, time and labour.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Regular cleaning and routine inspection help preserve both the appearance and protective qualities of powder-coated steelwork. Wash surfaces with mild soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue. Avoid abrasive cleaners, polishes and harsh chemicals, as these can damage the coating and affect its long-term performance.

Recommended Cleaning Frequency

  • Normal environments — Typical outdoor environments with low salt exposure: every 12 months.
  • Moderately exposed environments — More exposed locations, including areas with moderate salt or industrial pollution: every 6 months.
  • Highly exposed coastal or aggressive environments — Highly exposed coastal or aggressive industrial environments: every 3 months
