The Standard Behind the Protection
ISO 1461:2022 — Defined Performance
This standard sets the requirements for hot-dip galvanised coatings on fabricated iron and steel, including coating thickness, appearance and inspection criteria. It provides a consistent basis for assessing the completed galvanised product and its corrosion protection.
The galvanising process includes the preparation and cleaning of fabricated steel before full immersion in molten zinc. Removing surface contaminants allows the molten zinc to react directly with the steel, forming a metallurgically bonded protective coating across accessible surfaces.
01 — Standard & Quality
Hot-dip galvanising must be carried out in accordance with ISO 1461:2022, which specifies requirements for coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles.
A robust quality management system, such as ISO 9001 or equivalent, supports consistent quality assurance.
02 — Traceability
Full component traceability should be maintained throughout the galvanising process, helping ensure materials can be identified and tracked through each stage of production.
This provides a clear record throughout the process and supports consistent quality control and accountability.
03 — Inspection & Repair
Following galvanising, components should be inspected to confirm the required minimum coating thickness and identify any surface defects.
Any areas requiring renovation should be repaired using appropriate methods in accordance with ISO 1461:2022.
04 — Packaging & Technical Support
Galvanised components should be suitably packaged prior to despatch to protect the finished coating during transportation.
The galvaniser should also be a member of the Galvanizers Association, providing access to independent technical guidance and support for specifiers.
